gluten passing through milk from mother to baby
posted by annaknight 3 years ago

I am a breastfeeding mother to a 2 month old that is very gassy! I have tried cutting out all dairy and leafy vegetable products and it's not helping at all! Someone suggested that it may be the gluten that I am eating that is causing her to have gas. When researching this, I saw that eating too much gluten for those with a sensitivity to it are very gassy and can even break out in hives. Occassionaly when I drink beer, I break out in hives on my face. I started wondering if my newborn and I may both have a sensitivity to gluten. What do you think? What would other side effects be if I do have a gluten allergy?

Here is a link that I think you might find helpful. It does discuss the role gluten and casein play in autism, but it also talks about gluten in the breast milk. http://www.autism-pdd.net/testdump/test20931.htm Here is another link for information on gluten allergy/intollerance: http://www.glutenfreelife.co.uk/can-untreated-gluten-allergy-cause-lasting-damage.html

My daughter had a horrible time with gas while I was breast feeding her. The doctor thought it was dairy, leafy greens, etc. It never really cleared up when I removed those items. At 3 1/2 she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and I firmly believe she was reacting to the wheat in my diet while I was breastfeeding her.
