severe stomach pain
posted by laura176 1 year ago

HI. My daughter is 13 and dx with celiac 1 month ago. She has been on gluten free diet and has only gotten worse. She has severe stomach pains and headaches. THe doctors want her on vitamin D, calcium and a multivitamin but we cant start that since her stomach is in such distress. They also want her to take more milk but she cant tolerate milk without lactaid. We put her on probiotics but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any suggestions? How long can this pain last and what can we do for the headaches? She is being home schooled and is so sad.

How long has she had the severe pain?? Is she constipated?? Does she drink LOTS of water?? Is her colon clogged?? She may be full of yeast. Canadida . May need a colon cleanse. From what I have found with my kids milk is a mucous forming food and they do not do well with ANY dairy. Tracey

Unfortunately, it can take 6 months or so before all of the gluten is out of her system, so some of the pain may be related to that. As far as the milk goes, your daughter will most likely continue being lactose intolerant until her gut heals some. It took my daughter about 4 months on a strict gf diet for her gut to heal enough to digest lactose. We did not even allow her to have dairy for 3 months because of the pain and because it hurt her recovery process. Now, my daughter is back to drinking her favorite beverage which is skim milk, and can eat any dairy without pain or lactaid. FYI, many probiotics contain dairy so you've got to be careful about that. It is difficult to see your daughter in pain, but at least you've got a diagnosis. Now you've just got to be strict with the diet and allow her time to heal.

my advice is stay away from dairy. many celiacs are also lactose intolerant. i am surprised they want her to take milk. also be careful of cross contamination. the smallest amount of gluten can cause a severe reaction. check out celiac.org and celiac.com. they are great web sites

I'm sure you have been very strict but gluten is hidden in so many products. Read every lable on all ingredents, even in spices and herbs gluten can be hidden within. Also check for other food sensitivities.... corn syrup, food flavorings, food coloring, msg, ect. Perhaps a food sensitivity screening can be done to eliminate other things that are causing these sympoms. I hope she gets well soon, poor thing to have to suffer at such a young age!
