G-Free and All-Inclusives???
posted by megan.nask@gmail.com 2 months ago

I am traveling to the Myan Rivera, Mexico in one month time. Since becoming Gfree about 8 months ago I have not been to an All-Inclusive resort. I figured choosing Mexico would be a good start with their corn tortillas, corn chips, etc. However, I am wondering how to navigate buffet bars, a la cartes and a potential language barrier? Any good tips for what is likely safe to eat (other than fruits and veggies) and what I should really stay away from? Also, what about alcoholic drinks and the good ol tropical ones (pina coladas, daiquiris, etc)? Being solo on this gfree journey I am finding it very difficult to really learn what I can and cannot eat.. still.. 8 months later. Now, I really want to do my research before having to be in a bathing suit and risking getting off track!

I would suggest that you contact the resort and explain that you need a special diet. Tell them no wheat, rye, barley,or oats or any foods with their derivitives. I also recommend purchasing Shelly Case's book,Gluten Free Diet,as she is a celiac dietician and and is very specific about the diet. Try to see if there is a support group or local chapter of a nat'l celiac org in your area. They can be a tremendous help. I'm only 11 months into this journey but have taken several trips and managed okay. Good luck and bon voyage!
