mother of newly diagnosed celiac child
posted by Kim Mahal 5 years ago

Hi,

I am needing some help with introducing my eight year old son to a GF diet. He has just been confirmed as having celiacs disease. As an already picky eater, it is now nearly impossible to get him to eat a GF diet. Any suggestions!!! Please send any suggestions.

Thanks,

Frantic mother.

I am in the same boat. My daughter is 5 years old and just diagnosed. I have been focusing on getting her to eat the few foods that she loves that are gluten-free, like apples and yogurt. I took her to the store with me to buy gluten-free breads, cookies, and cereals. I tell her that we will try a bite together, and it is ok to spit it out if she doesn't like it. She has taken one bite of most things. The ones that she says are "ok" I keep putting on her plate at snack and mealtimes. She has begun to eat a few new things, but it is very slow going. I'm trying to just keep a smile on my face in front of her and not give up.

Maybe the reason why your son seemed like a picky eater was because of the symptoms of haviong celiac. I had a really difficult time initially after being diagnosed with celiac but it's been almost 2 years and now it doesn't bother me at all. I would suggest trying the brand pamela's. They make good cookies, a great chocolate cake, and a good pancake mix.

I understand your frustration. My son is eight also, and we have been doing a gluten free diet for about 10 months. We have tried a lot of food that my son has not like, and gluten free food is expensive. I can give you some ideas of what we really like. I do a lot of our grocery shopping at Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee (local grocery store in the Kansas City area). First of all, the great value food at Wal-Mart list if it is gluten-free, which for me makes shopping easier. We really like products from Gluten Free Pantry; pizza mixes, pan cakes, sugar cookies, brownies, muffins are some of the things that I can think of off of the top of my head. Someone already suggested Pamela's pan cakes and we do like those too. We like Glutino's crackers and pretzels. Annie's mac and cheese. We like Kinni-Toos chocolate vanilla sandwich cookies, they taste just like oreo's. Mrs. Leeper's Creamy Tuna, it's like Tuna Helper, and it is reasonable priced. We like Gorilla Munch from EnviroKidz (it taste likes Captain Crunch, and we like Fruity Pebbles, Coco Crisp. I don't know where you are located, but there is bakery in KC, Olivia's Oven, and I am not kidding it is wonderful! My son loves the cinnamon/apple donuts, bread, cookies, brownies!! Olivia Oven's pizza and bread-sticks are available at Waldo Pizza in Lee's Summit and KC and it is delicious! Search the web! I have found a lot of great recipes online. Hope this helps you out a little! ~Tara

Gluten-free foods in the stores are spendy and often not very good. I suggest finding some time and a good gluten free cookbook. The home made baked goods are so much better and will not break the bank
