5 year old daughter just diagnosed with Celiac
posted by Jx4Selman 2 years ago

For the past few years we have been dealing with some behavior problems with our daughter. We just wrote it off as toddler stuff. Six months ago I switched our diet to whole grains in the effort of trying to be more healthy. This is when I saw the severe behavior issues arise. After months of working with a child therapist, and having her tested for everything possible, I finally asked for some blood work to be done. Gluten is what showed up. We just had the endoscope done and confirmed Celiac.
This is all so very new to me, and I am looking for tips from those that have experience with gluten free diets. I just found a bunch of food that is gluten free, and she hasn't seemed to notice that I switched.
How long on average does it take for kids to start feeling better?

It can take 6 months or more to clear your daughter's system of gluten but you may start to notice subtle changes before then. If you don't have a gluten free household it's super easy to contaminate your daughter's gf items which could cause her to take a step back in her recovery. Since celiac is genetic, have you considered testing other family members? It's a long process but it does get easier with time. Good Luck.

I had a very hard time when I had to go gluten I started to feel better as soon as two weeks. I don't really know if it is different with kids. I know how hard it is to find things to eat so I made a blog to help make others lives a little easier. I hope the content is helpful for you. Good luck. http://www.glutenfreefive.com

My daughter is conducting a study, She is looking to identify if there is a correlation between infants with colic and celiac disease, her goal is to collect 1000 surveys of people with celiac or GI for a good population study. If the results prove a correlation it could result in much earlier diagnosis. Here is the website: www.celiacresearchproject.com would you please take this brief survey and pass it along to any others who might be of help. Thank you so much.

No one can really tell you when your daughter will start feeling better, but watch her behavior. Everyone's behavior is a bit off when they're terribly uncomfy. When she starts behaving better, you'll know she's feeling better. I've noticed that when my son's had wheat in the past couple days, his behavior is atrocious, and he seems to have absolutely no self control. We've also learned that Leaky Gut seems to go along w/ Celiac often, and it seems to be the case with him, so if your daughter has behavioral issues, you may find, as we did that keeping refined and fruit sugars to an absolute minimum will help greatly as well. Good Luck.

Try going back to basics with what you feed your daughter. Chicken, meat or fish, fresh veggies, potatoes or rice. The main thing that you might want to do is buy The G Free Diet by Elisabeth Hasselbeck she's a co-host on The View. Also you might consider buying Living Gluten free for Dummies. You can order The G Free Diet from Amazon.com you won't regret it...

Gluten free is defiantly the way to go. You should try to stay solid gluten free for 6 months but if she's feeling great go for the full year. But I have to add, Chiropractic care for your little one is one of the most natural and effective ways to help. A chiropractor is specifically trained on the spinal nerves that control and coordinate the Gastrointestinal Tract. My neighbor shared her story of how her daughter was having chronic constipation. She saw the chiropractor 6 times and her little girl was healthier and having better bowel movements. The Medical doctors couldn't believe the difference in as little as two weeks. This story made me WANT to go to the chiropractor and get my whole family checked. I am so amazed how much chiropractors can do beyond pain. It’s safe for children. They use softer adjustments and my family calls them the Popcorn doctor! haha get it all the pops! I hope you seek out a chiropractor. It has made a world of difference. I can also add, that behavior problems can be a child's way of trying to tell you something is wrong. Adjustments establish a better balance in the nervous system and brain chemcials. Seratonin and Dopamine. You can find a chiropractor in your area. Go to www.palmer.edu and click on the link “find a doctor.” God bless

I can completely relate to what you are going through with your daughter. I was having very similiar issues with my daughter. My daughter is now 5 and since she was about 3 I would watch her eat a meal and within 15 minutesto an hour or so her behavior would become uncontrollable to her much less an adult. Severe rage, aggression, hyperactivity. It was very hard to live as a family. Her baby sister was afraid of her. I new something was not right. She does have SPD so I just started researching and gluten seemed like my last resort to try becuase nothing else was working. I looked like a bad parent. It only tooked about 2 weeks after being 100% gluten free to see a change. Now we have been GF for 5 months and rage is gone!!! We still have typical 5 year old behavior but it worked.

Our son was not what I considered "normal" as a baby. Finally a doctor tested him at 2 1/2 yrs and found wheat and dairy to be the biggest factors. We eliminated both and saw MAJOR behavioral differences in him (no Celiac diagnosis). He is now 5 and these past few months have been bad again. We re-tested and found that wheat and dairy allergies have gone away and now corn is a major factor. We are going to see if he can tolerate reintroducing wheat and dairy slowly while taking away corn altogether. Whew. I had it all down and now on to big changes. All that said, we have tried just about all the gluten free products out there. He loves Belle & Evans GF Chicken Tenders (Whole Foods), Applegate Farms GF Nuggets (found at Kroger) and Kinnikinnick (www.kinnikinnick.com) brand cookies...just to name a few.

I have a daughter that will turn 5 in march and we went through the same thing a few years ago. My daughter is gluten sensitive so that makes a little difference in time for change in behavior but usually you will notice a large difference in a month and the stomach can heal itself in 6 months. It really depends on how GF you are. I know that when my daughter gets contaminated (depending on how much and what) her behavior can be ill for a day to a couple of days. I know a lot of people start out with the obvious things in their diet that contain gluten. After that it is time to look at the rest pots and pans really anything you cook with. Cleaning out all kitchen surfaces. Also looking at the brands of juice, frosting, mustard, lunch meat and so on that can have hidden contaminants or be produce in a company that can cross contaminate. I use the Gluten free grocery shopping guide as my GF bible! I also call or Google a new product if it is not in the book. Teaching your daughter and working with her school will be important to keep her well. My daughter knows when at school to eat only her food. I asked the parents to inform me what they will be bringing for a birthday so I can buy or make my daughter a gf version. With my daughter being Gluten sensitive she can't have a lot of soaps, shampoos, lotions, stickers....you get the idea. that is not usually the case with celiacs but if you are not noticing a big change in her behavior after you have taken ALL of the food gluten out then you may want to try taking these out too. Going GF can be over whelming at first and I am still learning new things daily but it is a lifestyle change not the end of the world even though it may feel like it at times. You are a better mom for going against the grain for her!
